Tom Topp

I am a self-taught photo and video artist from Vesterbro in Copenhagen, currently based at ArtLab 21 in Nørrebro. I began by creating videos for my progressive electronic jazz-funk music in the early 1990s. I experimented with whatever resources I could afford, exploring the possibilities, capabilities, and limitations of the camera to express my visual poetry and abstract universes. Today, my photography explores movement, time, and light—elements found in nature that possess a unique, captivating quality. While I have explored many different directions, I continue to draw inspiration from the various techniques I test. I am fascinated by the way movement can liberate objects, revealing dimensions within the landscape that ignite our imagination and transform how we perceive ourselves and experience the natural world. Technical perfection—or the precise depiction of what I observe—is not my primary concern. Instead, my work is rooted in sensory experience—an intuitive collaboration between myself, my surroundings, and the camera, all in pursuit of a poetic expression. I describe my style as "abstract realism"—at times leaning toward the abstract and minimalist, or even the impressionistic. The style is distinct and clean, characterized by overexposure. Soft focus and visual noise are effects created solely through the way I move the camera while taking the shot. Photo-editing software is used only to remove dust, adjust light and contrast, or crop the image to refine the composition.
