Kennet Havgaard

Kennet Islandi Havgaard used the COVID-19 lockdown to create a photo book. When the pandemic effectively shut down the country in the spring—simultaneously clearing many assignments from photographer Kennet Islandi Havgaard’s calendar—he decided to explore how he could channel that time into something creative. The result is now ready: a photo book titled "Fjæs" (Faces), which has just come off the press. "I had long considered creating a follow-up to my 2007 book, 'Surface.' Suddenly, I found myself with a lot of free time, and I figured I might as well make the most of it. That evolved into 'Fjæs'—a selection of portraits I’ve taken over the last 15 years or so. The book simply became my 'Corona project,'" explains Kennet Islandi Havgaard. Throughout his career, the photographer has specialized in photographing people, capturing a wide range of actors, musicians, artists, politicians, athletes, and other public figures. "My goal has always been for the images to be more than just perfectly lit records of smiling people; they should tell a story. My approach is that an image should communicate something to the viewer. You should be able to sense the presence of the person being photographed—and if things get a bit quirky or include a touch of humor, that’s perfectly fine," the photographer says, describing his method. The process of curating—selecting and excluding—from the thousands of images Kennet Islandi Havgaard has captured over the years has now culminated in this collection, presented in book form. "Fjæs," which is 200 pages long and features a foreword by Kristian Ditlev Jensen, can be purchased at www.ihavebeenframed.dk.
